Welcome to the Anchorage Daily News Electronic Edition
If you don't find answers to your questions here, you may email us at NIE@adn.com.
Q: What's the difference between the electronic edition and adn.com?
A: The electronic edition contains all the news, photos, ads, box scores and special sections in the printed Anchorage Daily News. It's a clickable replica of our newspaper. It is a subscriber-based service. Our website, www.adn.com, contains the day's top stories, breaking news updated throughout the day, web exclusives, real-time weather forecasts, discussion boards, and much more.
Q: What equipment does a teacher need to use the e-Edition?
A: For best performance with the e-Edition, we recommend high-speed internet access. There is no special hardware required and teachers do not need to load any special software on their computers.
Q: How do I use the e-Edition in my classroom without everyday computer access for all students?
A: Online content can be shared with your students in the classroom via a SmartBoard or LCD projector, which requires access to only one computer. You can also print and distribute copies of newspaper articles from the e-Edition.
Q: How do I find time in an already busy classroom schedule to use the Anchorage Daily News electronic edition?
A: The e-Edition simply replaces the printed version of the Daily News. It is more functional and user-friendly in that it allows you to search, highlight, zoom in and out, e-mail, save, print and distribute as many copies as necessary. Because the e-Edition is available online for an entire week, you and your students can access and use the newspaper as your classroom schedule allows.
Q: How can I afford to print and copy articles for all my students with limited budget dollars?
A: While we understand that printing and copying the Daily News e-Edition articles may mean a greater investment at the school level, these materials are generally well received by students and teachers alike, and the educational benefits outweigh any increased costs. To save money printed materials can be shared among students and even among classrooms, if necessary.
Q: When I log in to the electronic edition, I get a screen that is asking whether I have a dialup or broadband connection. What is this?
A: A dialup connection through a modem is a much slower connection speed and is not optimal for viewing the electronic edition. This screen tells us that you need a version optimized for that slower connection.
Q: When I try to log in, I am simply returned to the login page with no error message. Why is this happening?
A: The most likely explanation is that you are running a personal firewall such as Zone Alarm Pro or McAfee. If that is the case, you will need to add us to your "Trusted Zones"; area.
Q: The text is too small to read. How can I enlarge it?
A: You can change the size of the paper under the Page icon. The stories are meant to be clicked on to read them.
Q: When I have clicked on a story, how can I make the story window larger?
A: Just drag the triangle in the bottom right-hand corner of the story window. You control how much larger the window is.
Q: When I call up a story in the clickable paper, what are my viewing options?
A: Click on View in the story window. "Newspaper View" displays the story just as it appears in the newspaper, with columns and photos in place. "Quick View" is a text view of the story and photos. You can email or print the story in either mode. Just use the icons at the top of the story for print or email.
Q: Are the Sunday advertising inserts available in the electronic edition?
A: No they are not but the Sunday comics are available. The Sunday TV book is not included in the electronic edition.
Q: What is "My Collection"?
A: My Collection, an icon in the story window, allows you to save the story to a clipboard for later reading. The story will stay in your collection until you remove it. Please note: My Collection uses cookies, which do not travel from computer to computer. If you clear your cookies, you will lose your collected stories.
Q: Where are the obituaries?
A: You will always find the obituaries in the Alaska section. To find them quickly go to the Features and select search. Type in Obituaries and you will get links to the obituaries.
Q: Where are the back issues?
A: You can view issues up to seven days back. To view past issues, hold you mouse over the date at the top of the webpage. It will drop down the available dates that you may view. Click on the date that you want and it will open the e-Edition for you.
Q: What if I am only interested in articles about a certain subject, say, the Air Force Academy?
A: The e-Edition makes it easier than ever to find specific coverage. Go to the Features area, click on search, and enter the keywords. It will pull any instances of the keyword in the articles and a link will appear. You can search just that day or the entire week.
Q: Can I print out articles, photos, and features such as crossword or comics?
A: Yes. Simply click on the element you would like to print, and click on the printer icon in the top toolbar. If you wish to reprint an article, you must first get permission at (907) 257-4429.
Q: Can I email the crossword or comics to another user?
A: Yes you can. Simply click on the feature that you want and select the email icon.
Q: I prefer following text links to stories, rather than paging through an entire section or edition. How can I do that?
A: The Table of Contents is located in the top blue toolbar. This tool provides headlines and summaries of key elements on the pages. Just click on the headline to go to the story. The Table of Contents is a fast way to breeze through the clickable edition, closely resembling text links on a website.
Q: I am on AOL. Why am I having difficulties viewing the electronic edition?
A: Due to a browser limitation, AOL users must initialize the browser window first before starting to navigate the clickable edition. To initialize the browser window, simply resize the browser window once. NOTE: Some versions of the AOL browser will not display the electronic edition. If you are able to login but pages won't load, please try this corrective action: Dial into the internet as usual using you AOL connection, then close the AOL browser and open you default Internet Explorer browser (or Netscape, if you prefer it). Go to the Anchorage Daily News E-Edition login page and sign in as usual. The pages should load correctly.
Q: You are collecting personal information when I sign up. Is this being offered to any third parties?
A: No, this information is for internal use only. Those you sign up will receive emails from the Anchorage Daily News on occasion, but your personal data is not being sold or otherwise shared with outside parties.
Q: Can I download the entire paper as a PDF?
A: PDF, or high-resolution image, is primarily for users who want to download the entire paper for offline viewing later. Most users would find a high-resolution view to be taxing on you computer for regular use. The news pages and individual articles and ads are already optimized for Web viewing. But if you want to download a PDF of the paper, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.
Q: Does the download take a long time?
A: On a broadband connection, the download for an entire edition typically takes about 10 minutes. On a dialup connection it could be as long as 45 minutes.
Q: I can't see the whole page on my screen. What should I do?
A: If you cannot view the entire width of the page, find a scroll bar along the bottom edge of your web page. You can scroll right or left to view more of the page. You can also navigate up or down the web page using the scroll bar on the right side.
Q: Is there a way to get simple news alerts from the Anchorage Daily News, so I know when breaking news has occurred?
A: You may sign up for our newsletter at http://registration.adn.com/reg-bin/int.cgi?mode=register to receive an email with any breaking news that has occurred.
